InterPlay is excited to announce a rare immersive study program offered to our community on the beautiful island of Bali in partnership with Dell'Arte International! Join in this unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Bali’s rich and ancient arts culture to awaken the creativity and spiritual growth inside of you through InterPlay, Dance, Mask Carving, and Shadow Puppetry. Inspired by Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre's annual Dell'Arte Abroad: Bali program, InterPlay has joined with Dell'Arte to offer this special opportunity in 2024.
Agnotti (they/them) journeyed to Bali in May 2023 as a part of Dell'Arte's month-long program, answering a call to learn about the ancient connection between performing arts and spirituality. After studying with master teachers in the forms of Balinese dance, mask carving and shadow puppetry and experiencing the culture of the island through Balinese arts, they came back shifted and aligned. The stories, dances and songs that live inside us are our connection to a different dimension, to the spirit world. Agnotti was so inspired by the teachers - their joy and generosity, it inspired them to bring InterPlayers to Bali to experience two weeks that will be life-changing!
Each day will start with a fresh homemade breakfast that is included in the program cost. We will participate in an optional traditional offering to the spirits. Morning InterPlay sessions will focus on the exploration of feeding, cultivating and appreciating our inner artists. We will use InterPlay as a way to brainstorm, dream, and play with the creativity or creative projects that are living inside us.
In the afternoons, you will have the option of one of two tracks. Participants will choose one track to follow for the whole of the program. The first track will be learning two traditional Balinese types of dance. The second track will be learning mask carving techniques and carving a wooden mask of your own design. Please note that the mask carving class has filled capacity for the dance track is remaining.
Whole group activities will include:
• Two-hour InterPlay sessions
• Tour of Museum of Mask and Puppetry, led by Program Associate I Made Suryasa
• Lectures by our Program Associate, I Made Suryasa
• Attend a Performance of your Topeng Dance Teacher
• One Kecak Chanting Class
• Kecak Performance
• Daylong Shadow Puppetry Demo and Class
The experience will culminate in an evening of spiritual and performative sharing around all that we have created during the two-week experience through Balinese dance and mask, as well as an InterPlay-style performance with forms guiding us to share what is alive and emerging. This will be an unforgettable journey.
Agnotti is joined by fellow theater artist Janessa Johnsrude, who has a longstanding connection and relationship with Bali and the Balinese artists. Janessa will be helping with the coordination of the program, as she has led many Intensive programs with these artists in Bali.
The program will be limited to 14 participants and is expected to fill up. Please submit your full registration as soon as possible.
Mask Carving Track
Create your own mask with a Balinese master carver. In the picturesque village of Sukawati, you will study with our master teacher to learn how to work with traditional tools, wood, and pigments/paints to complete your mask. You can carve a traditional mask or a design of your own to bring home. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a set of traditional carving tools from your teacher. Note: Australia participants are allowed to bring masks back into Australia as long as it is painted and there is no animal fur used.
Balinese Dance Track
Your day will include two hours of Balinese dance study led by two professional Balinese dancers set amongst beautiful fauna overlooking Campuhan Ridge. Topeng is the “masked dance” performed at many of the ceremonies in Bali and you will spend an hour each day studying the precision and character of this form. You will also study the powerful and elegant dance that women traditionally perform in Bali.
WORKSHOPS:
Kecak Chanting
I Made Suryasa will lead us in a workshop studying the roots and workings of Kecak chanting before we see a performance together. Kecak chanting links complex layers of rhythmic vocals and movement designed to be performed in groups and is rooted in the religious trance-inducing exorcism dance.
Shadow Puppetry
We will spend a day learning about the ancient techniques and spiritual connection to shadow puppetry, followed by a performance lit by the traditional coconut oil lamp.
LOGISTICS:
Meals
Homemade and freshly-cooked breakfasts are provided by the program. All other meals will be covered by the participants. There are many options with a variety of price ranges.
Transportation & Getting Around
Transportation to and from workshops and classes is included with the program. Taxi transport around the city is easy and efficient. We are staying about a 20-30 minute walk from the city center. The city is walkable but there is a lot of uneven ground and it gets dark at night, so bring your flashlight. Transport to and from the airport is not included but can be arranged upon request.

We will be staying at Tamal Indrakila which is within walking distance from a grocery store, and many restaurants, including a vegetarian cafe adjacent to the hotel. There is a pool and a beautiful view that overlooks a famous walkway. Each room is supplied with a mini-fridge, air conditioning, and basic daily cleaning. This hotel is a family-run business and we are happy to support them! Accommodation is booked from June 16th to July 1st but longer stays or early arrivals can be arranged for additional cost.
Payment
Tuition is $2500 USD (around $3800 AUD) and includes single room accommodation, breakfasts, classes, excursions, performances, transportation to and from classes, as well as opening and closing feasts.
*There is a $200 USD discount for a double room occupancy (you would be paired with someone in the program or come with someone doing the program). We have three rooms for doubles occupancy and eight rooms for single occupancy.

Agnotti Cowie
Agnotti Cowie (they/them) attended the first ever “Art & Social Change: InterPlay for Millennial Leaders” in 2010. Since, she joined InterPlay’s national board as well as becoming a certified InterPlay leader. Agnotti facilitates workshops worldwide employing a variety of pedagogical techniques such as InterPlay, Theatre of the Oppressed, Devising, puppetry and clown. Currently they are based in Chicago where they lead workshops in schools, organizations and with social movements including as Co-Artistic Director of Opera-Matic, bringing participatory arts to public spaces. Recently, they have taken their work around the globe teaching InterPlay workshops in India, Germany, Australia, and Chile.
